TYAC is delighted to support the Together for Short Lives Children's Hospice Week for the first time this year.

Every year in the UK around 300 teenagers and young adults will die from cancer, despite survival from cancer overall, improving.  Meeting the needs of young people and their families during a terminal illness can be very challenging for all involved. Ensuring that young people are involved and supported in the discussions and decisions about the end of their life is an essential part of this.

There will often be challenges in negotiating the interface with children’s and adult services over this very difficult time. Together for Short Lives Children’s Hospice Week focuses on raising awareness around the needs of children and young people with life limiting conditions and the support that is available.  A number of hospice providers are already delivering aspects of their service dedicated to teenagers and young adults.

TYAC hopes that through events such as Children’s Hospice week, we can also raise awareness and engage people in discussions about the needs of young people and their families dealing with life-limiting conditions such as terminal cancer.
